With 2018's "incredible break-out album" We Are Alone Together, Bijou Noir Shared the Experience of Breaking Up With Your Entire State of Being

So, What Comes Next?

Living out of a suitcase, moving from country to country, often in extreme isolation, and an ocean away from his hometown of Minneapolis, MN, Bijou Noir’s Augustus Watkins watched from afar as America reeled from the 2016 presidential election, and reckoned with itself during #MeToo and throughout the Black Lives Matter movement.

Since his last release, the songwriter has taken time to re-examine his own identity, privilege, and uncertain future.

These deeply personal themes became even more culturally relevant, as the world self-isolated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and as Americans continued to address their own relationships with white supremacy.

Each song was written on solo ukulele and then arranged into full electropop productions in remote locations across Western and Central Europe, and The Balkans. These transcendent songs were just recently completed in Los Angeles and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

If you caught Bijou Noir during COVID-20, Sanctuary Festival, or another livestream event, now is your chance to hear "Start a Revolution" in its completed form. This is just the beginning. Watch for new Bijou Noir material each month.

Artist's Statement on "Start a Revolution"

It’s autumn and I’m in a vibrant capitol city which still bears marks from US and NATO bombings that took place decades ago. You can walk past a building with a hole in it where a missile passed through. It’s across the street from a government office, and a couple kilometers down from my favorite street tag, calling for a general strike (“generalni štrajk”). There are more than one can’t-miss bakeries between the two. The people are warm and inviting, but there’s an edge.

Back home, Black Lives Matter demonstrations are disrupting freeway traffic. I send some money to the legal defense fund of those arrested, but I wish I could do more. Only my privilege allows me to do less. We’re all products of our environment. My environment made me a coward. I’m working on being better.
