Mona Mur shares two new covers on Teen Icon

A new tide has come to the waters surrounding Snake Island. Punk and industrial maven Mona Mur is back with interpretations of iconic songs from two of music history's greatest: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and “Icon” by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Both songs combine the artist’s recent signature frenzied guitar with brilliant electronic textures, and sees Mona reuniting with her Snake Island collaborators, co-producer Goldkind and mastering engineer Jon Caffery, who calls the covers “even sicker than the originals”.

Renowned German arthouse film director Elfi Mikesch originally suggested Mona tackle the Nirvana song. Mona found herself being overtaken by the monstrous power of Kurt’s lyrics, and created a far heavier, doomier version. Mona had never conceived of covering Siouxsie, until she was invited to contribute to a recent tribute album. The album had a limited release, so it only made sense to share Mona’s interpretation as the second half of Teen Icon.

“I feel that these songs are universal pieces of art, just like certain opera arias,” says Mona, “and if a suggestion comes my way I will gladly surrender myself as a humble interpreter to let them rise and shine again.”

Mona Mur’s Teen Icon is available worldwide now.
